Manipulative 1: Types of Quadrilaterals. Created with GeoGebra.

A quadrilateral is any four-sided polygon. Many of the figures studied in elementary plane geometry are quadrilaterals. Manipulative 1 shows different types of quadrilaterals and their names. An arrow shows that a figure inherits the properties of one type of quadrilateral and adds another property.

  • A quadrilateral is a polygon with four sides.
  • A kite is a quadrilateral where two pair of adjacent sides are equal.
  • A trapezoid is a quadrilateral with two sides that are parallel. The parallel sides are opposite each other.
  • A parallelogram is a quadrilateral where both sets of opposite sides are parallel.
  • A rectangle is a parallelogram where the sides meet at right angles.
  • A rhombus is a quadrilateral with four equal sides.
  • A square is a rectangle with equal sides.
