A quadrilateral is any foursided polygon. Many of the
figures studied in elementary
plane geometry
are quadrilaterals. Manipulative 1 shows different types of quadrilaterals and their names. An arrow
shows that a figure inherits the properties of one type of quadrilateral and adds another property.

 A kite
is a quadrilateral where two pair of adjacent sides are equal.
 A trapezoid
is a quadrilateral with two sides that are
parallel.
The parallel sides are opposite each other.
 A parallelogram
is a quadrilateral where both sets of opposite sides are parallel.
 A rectangle
is a parallelogram where the sides meet at
right angles.
 A rhombus
is a quadrilateral with four equal sides.
 A square
is a rectangle with equal sides.
